WHO Sounds Warning Over Acute Lack of Weight-Loss Injections

Fewer than a tenth of individuals that would benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy can access them, states the WHO as it publishes its initial advice on the drugs.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide now obese, it is calling for more widespread and fairer availability to these injectable treatments.

Based on estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidance recognises that obesity is a long-term condition that can be treated with comprehensive and lifelong support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are major barriers to universal availability to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing significant body mass, says the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Scarcity

Despite the current most favorable outlook, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies could only cover around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, according to the health organization.

The guideline encourages nations and manufacturers to increase access, via approaches like voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the primary component of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in several nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Operate

The injections replicate a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so users eat less.

People typically start to lose weight after several weeks of starting on the once-weekly jabs.

Evidence points to patients may see weight return after a year of stopping the drug, as their normal appetite return.

To be above a healthy weight elevates your chance for contracting medical conditions, like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain malignancies.

Obesity concerns individuals in every country and was associated with over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
