The Substance Film
Coralie Fargeat's bold critique examines the tyranny of feminine aesthetics as well as the dreaded aspects of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers a masterful performance as Elisabeth, a mature celebrity demoted to starring in a workout series on the small screen. Pushed out due to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a mysterious and gruesome treatment titled the Substance. This generates a youthful duplicate called Sue, leading to a steadily more parasitic dynamic between the two. Friday 17 October, Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10
This classic whodunit thriller stars Keira Knightley playing Laura, a top-notch writer who takes a break from reporting on international wars to join a high-end voyage alongside a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her partner, plus additional affluent passengers. However when an unknown lady falls into the sea during the evening and all passengers insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Out now, Netflix
Presence
The acclaimed director pushes his directorial skills with this clever ghostly tale shot entirely from the viewpoint of the spirit. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the lens – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. The daughter appears aware of the supernatural presence, and it seems protective of her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that remains concise, with a twist that could catch you off guard. October 11th, multiple showings, the Sky channel
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image via this self-referential adventure. He portrays a self-obsessed celebrity named Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to visit a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by government spies to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unconventional method proves useful. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, the Channel 4 network
The Black Phone Horror
Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well without requiring a sequel. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has rendered the local kids on edge. Once Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and held captive in a dungeon, he anticipates a fatal end. Yet the old telephone in the room keeps ringing, with eerie communicators providing assistance, as the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. The actor plays the corrupt Bakker, who declares at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence monetising the American public's religious faith. It's a riot of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, however Jessica Chastain manages to depict the character in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, Film4
