One year ago, the landscape was completely separate. Prior to the national election, thoughtful residents could recognize the country's significant faults – its injustices and inequality – yet they continued to identify it as the US. A democracy. A country where legal governance held significance. A nation led by a honorable and upright public servant, notwithstanding his elderly years and growing weakness.

Currently, as October 2025 ends, countless Americans scarcely know the nation we reside in. Individuals alleged as undocumented migrants are detained and shoved into vehicles, sometimes refused legal rights. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is being torn down for an obscene ballroom. The leader is harassing his adversaries or supposed enemies and requesting the justice department surrender a huge total of public funds. Uniformed troops are dispatched into American cities on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, renamed the War Department, has practically liberated itself of regular press examination as it spends possibly reaching close to a trillion USD in public funds. Institutions, law firms, journalism organizations are submitting under the president’s threats, and rich magnates are regarded as nobility.

“America, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the limit toward dictatorship and fascism,” a noted author, wrote in August. “In the end, faster than I believed likely, it occurred here.”

Each day begins amid recent atrocities. And it's challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – how severely declined we are, and the speed at which it has happened.

However, we know that the president was properly voted in. Even after his highly troubling first term and even after the warnings that came with the awareness of the conservative plan – even after the leader directly stated openly he would be a dictator only on the first day – sufficient voters selected him over Kamala Harris.

While alarming as the current reality is, it's more daunting to understand that we have only been several months into this administration. Where will three more years of this decline find us? And what if that period transforms into a more extended duration, since there is not anyone to limit this president from opting that a third term is necessary, maybe for defense purposes?

Granted, there is still hope. There will be midterm elections the coming year which might bring a different governmental control, in case Democrats recapture one or both houses of Congress. There are public servants who are striving to impose certain responsibility, like lawmakers currently initiating an inquiry concerning the try to fund seizure by federal prosecutors.

And a leadership election in the next cycle could start the path to recovery exactly as last year’s election set us on this regrettable path.

There exist countless citizens demonstrating in the streets throughout communities, as they did in the past days during anti-authority protests.

A former official, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of the US is stirring”, exactly as before following the Red Scare during the fifties or amid the Vietnam war protests or throughout the seventies crisis.

On those occasions, the tilting vessel finally returned to balance.

He claims he knows the signals of that revival and notices it unfolding at present. As evidence, he cites the widespread marches, the broad, multi-faction opposition to a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal refusal by journalists to accept government requirements they only publish approved content.

“The slumbering entity perpetually exists dormant until some venality turns extremely harmful, a particular deed so contemptuous of societal benefit, certain violence so disruptive, that the giant has no choice other than to stir.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will prove to be right.

At the same time, the big questions persist: will the nation ever recover? Can it reclaim its standing internationally and its commitment to constitutional order?

Or should we recognize that the 250-year-old experiment worked for a while, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My cynical mind indicates that the latter is accurate; that everything could be lost. My hopeful heart, nevertheless, convinces me that we need to strive, by any means available.

Personally, as a media critic, that involves urging journalists to live up, more completely, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it might involve participating in political races, or coordinating protests, or finding ways to protect electoral access.

Under twelve months back, we existed in a separate situation. Twelve months later? Or in several years? The truth is, we don’t know. Our sole course is to strive to not give up.
