In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
