India's capital Wakes Up to Hazardous Haze Following Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements

Various sections of the capital recorded an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals ten times the recommended threshold set by the global health authority.

In some locations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x exceeding safe limits.

Firecracker Ban and New Changes

For the past four years, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that engulfs the city as colder weather begins.

However earlier this year, the current city government appealed to the supreme court to seek a easing of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a balance between "tradition and public health".

Judicial Decision and Reality

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological activists, the court approved the appeal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated periods throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the capital, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Many recording stations throughout the city recorded pollution reaching highest levels around late evening to the most severe measurements recorded during Diwali in at least three years.

Regional Implications

The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also triggered a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to declining atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants originating in across the border following the events.

Persistent Pollution Issue

Extremely elevated levels of pollution in the city have remained as a major challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

During celebratory seasons, the levels of dangerous airborne contaminants in the air has been observed to spike to 70% higher the worst records ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly considered as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Diverse Contamination Contributors

The situation in the city is attributed to a combination of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, development work, rubbish burning and pollutants from farm burning in adjacent areas of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers regularly set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, producing hazardous haze that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air sets in.

Health and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million people calling home the Delhi area is substantial, according to various research.

This pollution leads to high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand untimely mortalities per year in the capital.
