A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
